Weekend football

The last round of games just before the Christmas break in Spain and Germany.  In England the debate, whether to have one or not is still going on.

England premier league

The talking point was Ashley Williams kicking the ball against the back of Robin van Persie's head from close range. Sir Alex claimed van Persie could have been killed, adding that the ball could have broken van Persie's neck.

That seems rather dramatic from Sir Alex, who was probably just frustrated that his team drew 1-all with the Swans after having had chances to win it.

Meanwhile Arsenal beat Wigan 1-0 after a Mikel Arteta penalty settled the match.  The win saw them climb up to third in the league.

They have since dropped to fourth after Chelsea absolutely destroyed the Villans. Chelsea won 8-0 with Torres opening the flood gates with a great header in the 3rd minutes, Luiz, Lampard, Ivanovic, Ramires (brace), Oscar and Hazard all got in on the act.

Man City continued their trend of leaving it late to net a dramatic winner. This time it was Gareth Barry who used a Reading defender as levelled to head the ball home.  Tottenham were held to a nil all draw with Stoke, while Newcastle beat QPR 1-0.

'arry Redknapp claimed the players were overpaid for their ability. I suppose he would know wouldn't he, Portsmouth went bust because of him!

La liga

All the teams sent their wishes to Tito Vilanova who was discharged from hospital after throat surgery.

Real Madrid lost 3-2 to Malaga after Malaga brought some of the fine form they have shown so far this season in the second half. Real Madrid started  the game well and created numerous chances but it was Malaga that took the game to the visitors after the break.

Golden boy winner and Citeh target Isco opened the scoring and Sergio Sanchez was pressurised into an og just after the hour mark to level the game. Sanchez spent a good part of the game arguing with the other Sergio (Ramos).

Substitute and ex Citeh player  Roque Santa Cruz scored a quick fire brace. Iker Casillas who was dropped to the bench looked like he was dying a very slow and very painful death on the bench as the ball kept sailing past Antonio Adan and into the Real goal.

Karim Benzema pulled on back with a few minutes left but Malaga held on for a famous win. You can imagine the fall out, it was quick and harsh. Mourihno 's head was being called for and in true Mourinho style it rolled off his back like water off a duck's back.
Iker Casillas said he accepted the decision and wanted to work harder to get back in the team.

The Spanish press were so consumed by the end of Mourinho that they only mentioned in passing the story of Cristiano returning to Man United. Sir Alex has been hoping for this one since 2009 as he has said in numerous interviews. The English papers have been milking this one for all its worth and almost putting in as much effort as they spent trying to get him to Madrid.

This is after coming to the realisation that Wazza couldn't fulfil all that they expected off him. The general consensus in England at the time was that Cristiano was overshadowing him and he would be able to raise his game to world beating standard only after the Portuguese's departure. Instead he was found to be wanting and now they think the return of Cristiano would be a big boost for United. Some pundits even went as far as saying Citeh may never have won the league on goal difference with him in the team.

Meanwhile Barca were not happy that its Christmas break time after their amazing start to the season. They beat Vallladolid 3-1 with Messi ending at 90 goals for the year, despite it not being an official fifa record!

Atletico kept pace with the league leaders by beating Celta by a solitary goal. Bilbao continued their miserable start with a 2-0 loss to Zaragoza. The Lllorente situation may be solved in the new year with the player and his team mates getting pretty fed up with it. Some fan still carry Llorente out banners and don't look like letting up until he goes!

Serie A

Juventus 3-1 Cagliari. Juve needed out of favour striker Alessandro Matri 's two goals to beat Cagliari after trialling from to an early Pinilla penalty, Mirko Vucinic added a third deep into injury time.

Meanwhile Roma blow away Milan 4-2. Milan started poorly and were punished by 3 first half goals from Roma. Bardisso opened the scoring and he was ecstatic, Lamela scored a brace and Osvaldo netted the second.Their city rivals Inter were held on to a 1-all draw by a well organised Genoa side.
