Mid week football round up

All is back to normal after the tranfer window closed, no locking out of players.

English Premier league

Arsenal overcome the strong arm tactics of Stoke City to get a satisfying 1-0 win. Stoke employed their usual tactics and spent the match man handling the Arsenal players. The gunners , were not intimidated and created a number of good chances to take the lead but Begovic was in inspired form,  making crucial saves to keep his team in it.

It took 78 minutes for Lukas Podolski 's deflected free kick to break the deadlock. The solitary goal was enough for the win,despite a flurry of late chances. Despite being at Stoke for a short time it seems Micheal Owen is fitting right in. He tried to punch Arteta on the back in the dying minutes of the game after a tackle from the Spaniard.

New signing Nacho Monreal played against Stoke and showed some great touches, after joining the club from Malaga.

Man City dropped point against Liverpool to leave them 9 points behind leaders Man United. Man City lacked creativity in front of goal and showed how much they rely on Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure.  Meanwhile United needed just a single Rooney goal to beat Fulham.

Chelsea's problems continued after they let another lead slip. Newcastle started the game well against the blues with new signings trying to impress. They took deservedly took the lead through Guttierez just before the break.

Lampard pulled a goal back with a great strike just before the hour. Mata then gave Chelsea the lead 6 minutes later. Newbie Sissoko 's keen to win over the fans at after his transfer scored the equaliser just 7 minutes later and completed his  brace  in the 90th minute to give the magpies the win.

La Liga

Real Madrid was suffering from the effects of their midweek exertions against Barcelona and fell to a 1-0 loss to Granada. The team looked tired and lack lustre and failed to recover from going a goal down in early in the first half.

Cristiano Ronaldo who was playing with a special ankle brace to minimise the pain in his ankle, was unlucky to score the first og of his career, which earned Granada the suprising victory. Despite the miserable game, he took time to make one little boy happy after the game.

Meanwhile Barcelona were lucky to get a draw against a brilliant Valencia team that pushed the league leaders. Valencia took the lead through Argentine Ever Banega midway through the first half.

Leo Messi equalised from the penalty spot after Pedro went down in the area. Valencia had a number of glorious chances to win it late on but Victor Valdez made some great saves.


Borrusia Dortmund continued their great form in the new year with another win. They beat Leverkusen 2-3. Marco Reus opened the scoring inside 3 minutes and they added to their lead inside ten minutes. Reinartz 's quick fire brace in the scored half drew Leverkusen level .  LeverKusen's revival was short lived with Lewandowski netting the winner a minute after the equaliser.

Bayern continued their dominant form with a 3-0 win over Mainz, while Schalke suffered an embarrasing 2-1 loss to Furth, after letting a 1 goal lead slip. Djurdic earned Furth the winner with a late injury time goal.

Serie A

Mario Balotelli made a dream debut in Milan with a brace that earned his new team a 2-1 win over Udinese.

Juventus  worked hard to overcome a determined Chievo side to win 2-1 with two first half goals.

 Alessandro Matri opened the scoring with a stunner inside ten minutes, with Lichtsteiner adding to the lead just before half time.  Chievo pulled a goal back in the second half but Juve proved to be too strong.

Inter Milan lost 3-1 to Siena while Genoa beat Lazio 3-2.
