Week 5 football round up

A fantastic football filled weekend, with a number of big games, across Europe. There was the usual drama, some unexpected surprises and a number of bizarre postponements!
La Liga Champions Real Madrid overcome the sabotage drama on Sunday that saw the game postponed to win the Madrid Derby against Rayo Vallecano 2-0 on Monday night. It was lights out on Sunday night before the game because someone or someones got the bright idea of cutting the electrical cables at the Vallecas.
The officials took a long time to figure out what had happened because there was a storm before the game. However when they finally figured out what had happened the game was postponed to Monday night.
Real wanted it to kick off late afternoon in case there was some more problems with the lighting, but the game kicked off around quarter to eight as planned with no hitches this time and all the lights on! Real Madrid started the game brightly against a highly motivated Rayo side. They went ahead in the 13th minute after a great counter attacking move. They created a number of chances in the first half put failed to capitalise. In the second half Rayo tried their best to trouble the defence by throwing more attackers on. However the Real defense with Sergio Ramos back in the line up were rarely troubled except for a few jitters during set pieces.
Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the victory with a  penalty in the 70th minute and the result never really looked in doubt. Although the Rayo players gave it their all until the final whistle. The other game on Monday was Sevilla's exciting 2-0 's  over Deportivo. It was a pulsating match with lots of end to end stuff, but in the end a number of defencive blunders gave Sevilla the edge. Alvaro Negredo got the goal in the first half after some great work from the tireless Jesus Navas who slide in Cicinho for the assist. A strange kick from the keeper hit Rakitic on the back for the second goal late in the game. In other weekend games, Barcelona made hard work of beating a determined Granada side 2-0. Barcelona threw everything at the Granada defence but found Tonio to be in inspired form. The goal came late on courtesy of substitute Xavi with the second goal an og from Borja Gomez in injury time.
Leo Messi exchanged angry words with David Villa and Thiago Alcantra during the match. Villa and Alcantra were later substituted, and Thiago tried to play down the incidents during a promotional appearance on Monday. Mallorca suprised Valencia with a 2-0 win, Atletico beat Valladolid 2-1,Bilbao drew nil all with Malaga. English Premier League Arsenal held Man City to a 1-all draw at the Etihad stadium on Sunday. Arsenal dominated the game in the first half but were wasteful in front of goal. Man City drew first blood with a goal from Joleon Lescott just before the break.  Laurent Kocielny grabbed the equaliser for the Arsenal in the 82nd minute.
Meanwhile it was an emotional day at Anfield as Liverpool took on Man United. A poor Man United team managed to get a 2-1 win after a late penalty from Robin van Persie. Ashley Cole got the winner for Chelsea in the 1-0 win over Stoke, Newcastle beat Norwich 1-0 and Spurs beat QPR 2-1. Bundesliga Borrusia Dortmund lost 3-2 to Hamburg in a game that peeved their fans for more than one reason. The German Champions were slow to get going against Hamburg with their fans protesting at the increase in ticket prices. Son who netted a brace to the Hamburgers with his first coming in the first half and IIicevic getting the winner just before the hour mark. A Perisic brace was not enough to mount a comeback for the champions.
Meanwhile Bayern overcome Schalke 2-0 in a game they dominated from the get go. Toni Kroos and Tomas Mueller getting the goals.   Meanwhile Leverkusen drew 1-1 with Gladbach, Hoffeinheim beat Hannover 3-1 and Stuttgart drew 2-all with Bremen. Serie A Juventus continued their dominant start to the season with a 2-0 win over Chievo. Fabio Quagliarella netted a brace, taking advantage of having a start with most of first teamers rested.

Meanwhile Milan had a poor game that they lost 2-1 to Udinese and managed to get two players sent off to round off a bad day at the office. Kevin Prince Boateng and new boy Zapata getting their marching orders. Their compariots Inter also lost 2-0 to Siena. La Liga wasnt the only one with a bizarre postponement, Roma vs Cagliari was also postponed. The game was pushed forward because the Cagliari stadium didnt have all the paper work because its under construction. However they were granted permission to play the game without fans but somehow they managed to let the fans in! The game was then called off for safety reasons!
